The classification and use of silica gel

Silica gel can be classified in different ways of preparation, uses and its characteristics. By the ways of preparation. Silica gels can be categorized into the silicone gel, silica sol, aerogel and the fine silica products through a deep process. By the ways of existence forms. Silica gels can be categorized into liquid, powder, lump, spherical and other relative specifications.  By the uses. Silica gels can be categorized into the industrial use, civil use, preparation and abruption use, chromatogram analysis use, packing use.

Silica gel’s classification by the characteristics may be done by its chemical composition, purification and pore’s physical structure. Silica gel’s characteristics and the inter-differences may greatly depend on the structural characteristics of the pores. Silica gels can be classified by the pore structure and the uses as follows:

1.       Fine-pore silica gel (Type A silica gel)

Its average pore diameter is 20--30 angstroms. The specific surface area could be over 600 m2/g.there are fine-pore spherical-shaped silica gel, fine-pore lump silica gel, variable-pressure absorption silica gel, blue silica gel indicator, and color-changing silica gel. They are mainly used for drying, damp resistance or as the catalyst carrier, absorbent, separator and variable-pressure absorption.

 2.       Medium-pored silica gel (Type B silica gel)

Type B silica gel’s average pore-diameter is 45-70 angstroms. The specific surface area could be 450-650m2/g. This is mainly used for liquid absorbent, dryer and perfume carrier as well as the catalyst carrier and silica sand.

 3.  Macro-pored silica gel (Type C silica gel)

Its average pore diameter is usually 80-125 angstroms. The specific surface area could be 300—400m2/g. The above specifications may be different according to the types. It includes Macro-pored spherical silica gel, Macro-pored micro-sphere silica gel, Macro-pored lump silica gel, column chromatography silica gel, liquid chromatogram-use silica gel and activation silica gel. Macro-pored silica gel is mainly used for the dehydrated purification of the industrial gases, the clearance of the organic acids and high polymers in the insulative oil, the purification and separation of the medicines and as the crystal cat litter, the catalyst or the catalyst carrier.

 

4.  Big-pored silica gel

Its average pore diameter is above 120 angstroms. The specific surface area could be 100—200 m2/g and the pore volume is 1.4—2.0ml/g. this is a big-pored silica gel with low density. It is mainly used as the dulling agent, friction material in tooth-paste, refining and purifying the effective ingredients in herbs and compound medicines, the absorption of the macromolecule protein in the fermented stuffs (like the beer silica gel), the purification of water and the recycle of the valuable metals.
